A Distress Signal Beyond the Wormhole – Star Trek Fanfiction (Red Directive #05)
“Captain, we’re approaching the wormhole aperture. Distance two hundred thousand kilometers,” Ensign Jaxa announced.
“On screen.”
The Bajoran wormhole appeared on the main viewscreen. It blossomed open ahead of the USS Cairo like a tear in space itself.
Brilliant blue energy spiraled outward as the aperture stabilized.
Even after everything Starfleet had learned about it, seeing it with my own eyes was something else entirely.
“Helm ready. Aligning approach vector.”
Ensign Jaxa continued reassuring me that her assignment had been well earned.
Commander T’Varen looked up from the padd filled with Vulcan equations.
“Chronometric flux within acceptable parameters, Captain.”
“Fascinating. Subspace harmonics are fluctuating far beyond standard warp field behavior.”
I raised an eyebrow at Lieutenant Darak’s statement.
There was no turning back now.
“Ensign Jaxa, take us in.”
Our helmsman worked her magic and before we knew it…
The stars vanished.
In their place, a river of luminous blue energy surrounded the Cairo as we entered the wormhole’s interior corridor.
The lights inside the ship dimmed slightly from the exotic energy. The subspace distortions made it feel as if we were traveling through something alive.
“Captain.”
I turned to Lieutenant Darak and saw the expression on his face. His voice sounded excited and worried all at once.
“It’s fascinating, Captain. I’ve never seen anything like it before. The chronometric fluctuations on the Cairo’s sensors are all over the place. Some of our other sensors are struggling to read the environment.”
“Keep tracking what you can.”
Even with Darak’s report, the ride through the wormhole wasn’t that bad. I had half expected it to be a much bumpier experience.
I turned back to the main viewscreen.
Ensign Jaxa stared ahead with wide eyes.
“Helm responding normally. Though if anyone asks, I’m telling them I piloted us through a celestial river.”
Lieutenant Darak and I laughed slightly, but Commander T’Varen quickly responded with her usual Vulcan precision.
“Technically inaccurate. This phenomenon is composed primarily of verteron particles.”
For a moment, the bridge fell silent.
Humanity had dreamed of exploring beyond the edges of known space for centuries.
Now we were doing it.
Without warning, the swirling corridor collapsed behind us as the Cairo emerged into the Gamma Quadrant.
I fell forward slightly in my captain’s chair as we exited, but managed to keep my grip on the armrests.
I looked up at the viewscreen, unsure what to expect.
For a moment, all we saw was the familiar void of stars.
“Jaxa, maintain impulse.”
Entering the Gamma Quadrant slowly felt like the smart approach.
“Bridge to Engineering.”
A distinctive warm and conversational voice responded over the comms.
“Commander Pelia here.”
“Commander, we’ve exited the wormhole. Status?”
“Oh, nothing out of the normal. A few sparks here and there, a few ensigns on the floor…”
I could hear coughing in the background.
“Just a few things to patch up, but I think we’ve got it. Right, guys?”
I heard several groans before the comm channel cut out.
I wasn’t sure I shared her enthusiasm. Still, I trusted she knew what she was doing.
A familiar beeping sound came from the science console behind me.
Before I could react, Lieutenant Darak was already analyzing it.
“Captain… I’m detecting a distress beacon. Andorian frequency modulation.”
“Magnify on screen.”
A section of the viewscreen zoomed in, revealing a damaged Andorian shuttle drifting among debris.
Then a young Andorian male appeared on the screen. His blue skin was pale from exhaustion, and his antennae drooped slightly.
“This is Sub-Commander Zh'lek Ren… Andorian expedition vessel Tal’kir. If anyone can hear this… please respond.”
Day one.
We had barely been in the Gamma Quadrant for five minutes and we were already answering distress signals from other Federation species.
What was an Andorian doing in the Gamma Quadrant?
Time to do what we do best.
The doors to the bridge hissed open and Drim walked toward the operations and communications console.
Perfect timing.
“Drim, open comms.”
“Sub-Commander Zh’lek Ren, this is Captain A. Kelly of the Federation starship USS Cairo.”
“You’re… Starfleet?”
The young Andorian suddenly sounded hopeful, though he looked like he was barely holding on.
“I was beginning to think the Alpha Quadrant forgot about me.”
Sparks flew across the viewscreen and smoke filled the background of his shuttle.
It wasn’t looking good.
“Sub-Commander, what are you doing in the Gamma Quadrant alone in a shuttle?”
More sparks burst behind him as the transmission began cutting out.
I could hear the young Andorian coughing through the static.
“Captain… life… failing…”
Alarms blared from his console.
Darak spoke quickly.
“Captain! Scans show his shuttle has sustained severe damage. A warp core breach is imminent. Sixty seconds.”
“Drim, can you get a transporter lock?”
His hands moved rapidly across the console.
“Yes, sir.”
The bridge doors hissed open again and Kurn entered.
Perfect timing once more.
“Computer, Yellow Alert.”
“Drim, beam him directly to the bridge.”
“Kurn, phaser out.”
He might be a Federation citizen, but I still didn’t trust the fact he was alone in the Gamma Quadrant in a damaged shuttle.
Kurn and Commander T’Varen both drew their phasers. I pulled mine from my belt as well.
The familiar shimmer of transporter energy filled the bridge as the young Andorian materialized in front of me.
I kept my phaser aimed.
So did the rest of my officers.
The Andorian coughed, clearly frightened.
“Please… I mean you no harm.”
Suddenly the explosion of his shuttle caught everyone’s attention.
We watched on the viewscreen as the vessel erupted into a brilliant flash before collapsing into silence.
The Andorian stared at the screen in disbelief.
He knew exactly how close he had come to dying.
Leverage.
Still aiming my phaser, I addressed him.
“Formalities later.”
I stepped forward slightly.
“Tell me something, Sub-Commander…”
“What are you doing in the Gamma Quadrant?”
