Captain’s Log: The Crew That Shouldn’t Work (But Might)

Captain’s Personal Log, Stardate 2602.25
Tonight was supposed to be a normal blog night.
Instead… I accidentally assembled a Starfleet command crew.
After a long day of currency mishaps due to Earth’s primitive taxation system, personal and administrative duties, I really wanted to decompress and jump into something more entertaining than the normal everyday log.
So far, my sci-fi story in progress takes place in 2369, right after the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor ends and Deep Space 9 becomes a Federation station. The wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant has just opened, and the Federation wants a presence established as quickly as possible.
They’re going to need their best captain to take over the USS Cairo from Captain Jellico, who is being reassigned to the Cardassian frontier. Someone who is in Starfleet for the right reasons — to lead the new colonists to Federation Colony EOS Prospera, located 3.5 light-years inside the Gamma Quadrant.
I am currently captaining the USS Rutledge after serving as First Officer under Captain Benjamin Maxwell. Following his unauthorized attacks on Cardassian ships and outposts, I assisted Starfleet Command in bringing the situation to a peaceful resolution. Captain Maxwell was subsequently court-martialed and transferred to the Federation penal colony Ananke Alpha. Command of the Rutledge was then assigned to me.
I plan to rendezvous with the USS Cairo and the new Federation colonists at Deep Space 9. My new bridge crew should also be there to greet me.
Starfleet Command appears to believe that a diverse command structure will increase the probability of colony success. Looking over the personnel assignments… I am inclined to agree.
I expect a very interesting mission ahead of us with this wayward crew of mine.
“Computer, I would like to log the names of my new bridge officers who will be joining me aboard the USS Cairo to assist with the colonization mission to EOS Prospera in the Gamma Quadrant.”
Computer: Bridge Officer Log Initiated.
“First Officer: Commander T’Varen, of the House of Surak of Vulcan, related to Ambassador Spock through the Sarek lineage. Starfleet Command has assigned her specifically to assist in stabilizing the transition of command. Her record reflects exceptional strategic analysis and adherence to Federation principles. I anticipate her counsel will prove invaluable.”
“Helmsman: Ensign Sito Jaxa, a recent Bajoran graduate of Starfleet Academy who was involved in the Nova Squadron Kolvoord Starburst incident. I have reviewed her Academy evaluations personally and expect great things from this ensign, having managed to complete her training after enduring the scrutiny of such an event.”
“Tactical Officer: Kurn, son of Mogh, serving as a Klingon Defense Force exchange officer. Klingon brother to Chief Security Officer Worf of the USS Enterprise-D. His combat experience and tactical instincts will be a considerable asset.”
“Operations Officer: Drim, Ferengi cousin to Brunt, assigned as a Ferengi Commerce Authority liaison from Ferenginar. He is participating in a cooperative exchange initiative between the Ferengi Alliance and Starfleet, attached to this mission to assist with logistics coordination, resource allocation, and economic planning for the colony initiative. His motivations may be profit-driven, but his expertise could prove invaluable.”
“Science Officer: Lieutenant Commander Darak, formerly associated with the Obsidian Order analytical division and cousin to Garak — currently known as a tailor on Deep Space 9. Following the Cardassian withdrawal from Bajor, he sought asylum within the Federation and accepted a special Starfleet commission. His scientific training and intelligence background offer unique advantages.”
“Engineering Officer: Commander Pelia, a Lanthanite who previously served aboard the original USS Enterprise. She has returned to active duty periodically over the centuries, citing Starfleet technological advancement as ‘too interesting to ignore.’ I am confident her experience will ensure the Cairo performs beyond expectations.”
“Chief Medical Officer: EMH — Emergency Medical Hologram, Mark I prototype. Installed as part of Starfleet’s ongoing medical holographic trials. It is still in the testing phase, but from what I have seen of the colonist manifest, there are many able-bodied physicians available to assume primary medical roles once we reach EOS Prospera.”
“Mess Hall Attendant: AURA, a service-class synthetic android — Adaptive Utility Recreational Android — assigned to morale and hospitality support functions aboard the vessel.”
Captain’s Note: Diversity may create great conflict, but it can also create great results.
“Computer, end personal log.”
Computer: Bridge Officer Log Entry Complete.
